The Word: Watch Carly Rae Jepsen throw the worst pitch ever

“Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen must have misheard her duties at last night’s Tampa Bay Rays game. She was supposed to throw the first pitch, not the worst pitch.

Anyway, she did both. Carly opened the game with a sort of reverse foul ball that bounced, rolled across the first base line miles from home plate and finally bumped to a stop against a camera.

The singer appeared to have a sense of humor about the epically bad throw: She covered her mouth with her hands, then threw them ruefully to the sky.

It’s not her fault, anyway. She’s Canadian. I’m sure she would have done great if they wanted her to throw the first puck, or the first bobsled.

When the pop singer isn’t making sports faux pas, she has shown an activist streak. Jepsen pulled out of a concert for the Boy Scouts of America because of the organization’s ban on gay members, becoming the second headliner to pull out of the Scouts’ Summer Jamboree show.

Jepsen, whose hit single “Call Me Maybe” was nominated for Grammy Song of the Year, said on Twitter that she would not perform for the Boy Scouts because of her support for gay rights.

“I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level,” Jepsen, 27, said.
